Update 5/28/2021
Upon leaving the forest of Maeril, Delaelia, Feliks, Theia, Dashing, and Ramsey cross paths with an elderly owl aarakocra by the name of Tchurni (guest player Justin Barron). When boulders begin falling from the sky, our heroes rush to Tchurni’s rescue, only to find there’s more to this stranger than meets the eye. Following this mysterious old monk on his quest for a rare item, they find the source of the problem is a large mountain giant named Drungar, who has lost his “snow.” While Delaelia has a religious experience in Drungar’s cave, Feliks and Tchurni attempt to battle Drungar, and Theia makes her first death saving throw!
After some trial and error, our heroes realize “snow” isn’t an item, it’s a person, and they are able to reunite Drungar with his beloved pet goat. Tchurni’s prize, nectar from the hive of the flutterbees that nest outside of Drungar’s cave, makes a strong healing mead, which he is happy to share with the party.
Our adventurers part ways with their newfound friends, and travel deeper into the mountains, only to get caught in a fearsome thunderstorm. While tight quarters make for a tense conversation between Delaelia and Feliks, Princess Theia follows the mysterious cry of a small child only to become possessed by a mournful specter. Under the ghost’s control, Theia is forced to attack her friends, who in turn, must knock her unconscious to break the spirit’s hold.
The next evening our adventurers finally reach their first destination, Feliks’s hometown of Wundertrundle, but not before confronting a massive fire-breathing dragon. Thankfully, the dragon turns out to be an illusion created by Professor Glimgloff, Feliks’s childhood teacher, for the purpose of warding away other threats.
Upon visiting the local inn/tavern our heroes learn from the owner, Pierre Fiddlefair, that his son, Pipsquick Fiddlefair, was kidnapped by a mysterious and terrifying creature referred to as The Night Stalker, only three days prior. Our heroes agree they will do whatever they can to bring Pipsquick home.
They then get to see Feliks’s childhood home, where they meet his family: Els'nik (Elle-SNICK), his stoic farmer father, Tinkowa (Teen-Koh-Wah), his doting mother, and Z'mr (Zimmer), his tech-obsessed little sister. Over dinner with the St. Frumpterrable family, our heroes learn that Wundertrundle has been visited by The Night Stalker before, once last year, and again years before that. Both times, children were taken. Only two gnomes have ever escaped the creature’s clutches: a young, gnome girl named Yvonne, and Feliks.
After dinner Feliks takes his friends to a gravesite, where he reveals that he was once engaged to a young gnome woman named Myrahneeda. He confesses he and Myrahneeda tried to defeat the Night Stalker on their own. When confronted by the creature, Feliks froze and was struck down. When he awoke, Myrahneeda was gone.
Motivated to put an end to this horror, our heroes interview other citizens of Wundetrundle, including Yvonne, who hasn’t spoken a word since her brush with the Night Stalker. Yvonne somehow escaped the oni, but her brother Willowbee was never found. From Yvonne’s drawings, they learn that the beast is able to change its shape to disguise itself as a familiar face, (in her case, Professor Glimgloff) and lure children to the abandoned mines.
While Delaelia takes a rest, Princess Theia and Feliks decide to take night patrol. Very quickly, it becomes evident that they never should have split the party. While Feliks, Theia and Lorn have their hands full with a pair of spooky scarecrows, Delaelia is attacked in the night by a fire genasi assassin named Myers, who claims to be an agent of the goddess Zendia, sent to murder her and the goddess Kildora.
Fortunately, Delaelia is quite capable and subdues her attacker, bare-breasted, and barely rested. Battered and bloodied, Myers is sent to the local jail, and our heroes finally get some rest…
The next morning, they take off for the mines first thing. A number of perils await them inside, each more terrifying than the next. Almost immediately upon entry, Ramsey almost gets eaten by a mimic (a beast that imitates inanimate objects, only to gobble up whomever gets too closer), and Feliks finds a familiar-looking doll on the ground. It reminds him of the mysterious elven child he met in Afonydheuoedd.
Our heroes climb deeper into the mines, discovering a statue of an old dwarven ruler, King Jorraeck Brightarm. Moments later, their world is turned upside down when Delaelia lights a black candle, transporting herself into a nightmare pocket dimension where she must face her fears or be trapped for eternity. Princess Theia makes the choice to go in after Delaelia, and help her conquer her fears so she can escape. When Feliks is left behind, Silver Tongue compels him to explore the mine further, and he discovers a bag of acorns and an old suit of armour at the bottom of a cave stream.
Inside the candle, Delaelia invokes the name of Kildora, and with the power of the goddess coursing through her, summons two forest mastiffs—Bill and Lil. Together, Theia, Delaelia, Lorn and their magical dogs emerge from the candle, shaken but stronger. Delaelia collects the candle before they continue onward.
Not far ahead they discover a massive diamond, set in the wall on the other side of a treacherous crevice. Silver Tongue once more compels Feliks forward, and the rest of the party follows suit, more curious about an adjacent room they see a wisp entering and exiting. After just barely making it across, they discover two powder kegs and some pink star rose quartz in this hidden room. They consider using the explosives to blow a hole in the wall, so they don’t have to go back across the crevice, but luckily Delaelia uncovers a hidden switch and the wall in front of them opens.
Down, down they continue, past pit traps and into the deepest depths, where they finally find what they’re looking for: the Oni’s nest. At the bottom of yet another hole, they find three captives: Pipsquick Fiddlefair, a young orc-child bard, and Hilda, from the inn in Highguard. Surprised and alarmed, our heroes free the children and prepare themselves to fight the oni, only to find themselves face to face with Myrahneeda. Quickly Feliks realizes this visage is nothing but another trick, and our heroes pursue the slippery oni with a newfound fury, in a chase taking them back up to the second level of the mines.
It is there they meet Professor Glimgoff—or is it? Delaelia lights the candle with the intention of catching the oni, but Feliks and Princess Theia are caught in the crosshairs, and it is finally his turn to face his fears. In the candle, Feliks confronts the shame he feels over Myrahneeda’s death. Meanwhile, Delaelia and Lorn take on the oni together—a seemingly impossible task—but with one sting from Lorn’s tail, the oni falls into slumber.
After emerging from the candle, Feliks seeks out Myrahneeda’s spirit and learns the truth of her death—that she chose to pursue the oni on her own, rather than waiting for Feliks to awaken and join her, and that in doing so she was able to save Yvonne’s life. In this tender moment, Feliks forgives himself, and promises Myrah he will help free the spirit of young Willowbee, who didn’t survive the oni’s attack.
Using the explosives they found earlier, our heroes collapse the abandoned mine, and are met by Dashing, Ramsey, Glimgoff, and the children at the entrance. Unfortunately, their friends inform them, the battle isn’t over—Wundertrundle is one fire! Rushing to action, our heroes manage to catch and take out the cause of the fire, Myers the fire genasi assassin. Though the Fiddle Fair Inn is destroyed, Pierre Fiddlefair and Pipsquick are reunited and our heroes finally get some much-deserved rest.
While meditating, Delaelia uses the power of the goddess within her to influence goings-on between her mother and her mentor back in Sylvail; Feliks is visited by the deity Numair, and agrees to become their champion; Princess Theia takes flight and sees a disturbing vision of her father, his body cold, his eyes mirrors.
The next day, before bidding their new friends farewell, our heroes are led by Yvonne to the forest, where they help the lost spirit of Willowbee finally find peace.
Now all that remains is to return Oglynn to his home, plant the godseed, find the source of whatever is polluting the Porvita River, and return to Highguard to help the poor citizens. Oh, and maybe do something about that darn cult of Zendia?
Onward to the next adventure!
